Colorado Springs Technology Incubator formed

Colorado Springs Business Journal,  Aug 30, 2002  by Lance Gurwell

Layoffs in the past year hammered the local technology industry, but something good has resulted. The Colorado Springs Technology Incubator was formed to give assistance to accidental entrepreneurs - those who may have started a business after losing employment because of layoffs, closures or mergers.

At its recent grand opening, CSTI introduced attendees to some of its recipients.

In one example, a pair of local nurses started a company called Corporate Hearts. The company makes information from research hospitals more accessible to nurses, and then to patients.

They research and sort mountains of medical advice, then act as a clearinghouse for both medical information and recognized specialists, which can quickly be provided to a client.

Startup funds are always scarce, especially when the economy is faltering. CSTI aims to lessen that concern.

"Given the trying times most early stage companies are currently experiencing with private equity investment, our client companies are securing financing and growing at an impressive rate," said Gary Markle, president and chief executive officer of CSTI.

Sponsors of CSTI are the Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, the state Economic Development Corporation, Hogan and Hartson, LLP, Steiner Group, Holme Roberts & Owen LLP, Sandia Advertising & Design, Van Gilder Insurance Corporation, BiggsKofford Certified Public Accountants and Business Consultants, and Origin Communications.
