No Joke: ThinkGeek's Gag Gadget List to Draw Record Crowd
Market Wire, April, 2008
ThinkGeek, Inc. ( http://www.thinkgeek.com ), the online retail hub famous for its irreverent high-tech gadgets, today took the irreverence a step further with the unveiling of its popular annual list of April Fool's Day products. The gag gadgets range from the humorous to the impossible, and promise to draw record number of views for the ThinkGeek site.
"A surprising number of people don't realize the products are fake," said Caroline Offutt, general manager, ThinkGeek. "But our regular customers eagerly anticipate the list every year: April 1st is always our highest site-traffic day of the year."
In addition to a USB Pregnancy Test and Caffeinated Cereal, purported products also include a Personal Soundtrack t-shirt, which plays your personal .mp3 anthem wherever you go, and a Video Tazer, which automatically uploads the video of the person being tazed onto YouTube.
ThinkGeek features the gag gadgets alongside its regular catalog of items, fooling unwary shoppers with official-looking descriptions, pictures, and even videos of prototypes created especially for April 1st. Clicking on "buy product" earns the consumer a smiley face and the punchline "HA! Gotcha!"
ThinkGeek's tradition of creating a 4/1 gadget list goes back to 2001, and has become the most eagerly anticipated April Fool's Day joke in the tech community. This year's 4/1 list is currently available on www.thinkgeek.com .
