The Information Systems Security Association (ISSA(1)) named Nortel Government Solutions(1) Outstanding Organization of the Year for 2007 at its recent annual membership meeting in San Francisco.
Nortel Government Solutions, a U.S. company wholly owned by Nortel(1) (TSX: NT)(NYSE: NT), was recognized for its contributions to the growth of the Northern Virginia chapter, the ISSA's largest.
"Simply stated, if it had not been for the extensive support of Nortel Government Solutions, we would not have achieved the success of becoming the largest ISSA chapter in the world," said Brian Schultz, president of the ISSA's Northern Virginia chapter.
"We are thrilled to receive this recognition," said Larry Jurcich, vice president and general manager, Information Assurance and Engineering Division, Nortel Government Solutions. "The ISSA plays a vital role in developing, nourishing and supporting information security professionals. We're delighted to be involved in the growth of the Northern Virginia chapter, and honored to be mentioned alongside the other outstanding ISSA award winners."
As a Gold Sponsor, Nortel Government Solutions has hosted eight Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Study Groups; six National Security Agency INFOSEC assessment methodology courses; four National Security Agency INFOSEC evaluation methodology courses; a certification and accreditation conference; and numerous meetings for the chapter's board and committees over the chapter's four-year development.
The ISSA Organization of the Year award is presented annually to a company or organization that makes a significant contribution to ISSA and the information security profession. Candidates must demonstrate a sustained, proactive presence that directly contributes to the leadership and professionalism of the association and its membership. This is achieved by providing services, products, knowledge or direct support that promotes the highest ethical standards in addressing information security, or by exhibiting leadership to the profession through world-class security programs.
In addition to Nortel Government Solutions, the ISSA recognized six other individuals and chapters at its annual meeting.
"Through the dedication and contributions of many volunteers, ISSA enhances the depth and breadth of knowledge and expertise of information security professionals," said Howard A. Schmidt, president, ISSA International. "Their gifts of time, wisdom and resources ensure that we are able to provide quality education and professional experiences for our members and the information security community. It is a great pleasure to honor these key individuals and organizations for their service to ISSA and the industry."
The other award winners included:
ISSA Hall of Fame Award: William Tompkins. Tompkins, who served as president of the ISSA board in 2002, received the ISSA's most prestigious awards for his career-long contributions to the promotion of the security profession.
Outstanding Security Professional of the Year: Sherry Voit, information security specialist with CACI Technologies, Round Hill, Va. Voit was instrumental in the development of the ISSA Northern Virginia Chapter's first CISSP study group and the first class in National Security Agency INFOSEC assessment methodology.
