Digital Freedom Statement

Market Wire,  August, 2007

Tags: ABC Inc., MARKETING, NBC, video

The following statement was released today by Maura Corbett of the Digital Freedom Campaign in response to the announcement that ABC and NBC will post online the videos of their respective presidential candidate debates and allow consumers to use and share the footage.

"This is a historic moment; ABC and NBC should be congratulated for their foresight and their willingness to break new ground in the digital age. Today ABC and NBC willingly removed themselves as the gatekeepers to the modern political process. Allowing video of the upcoming debates to be viewed and excerpted online invites more Americans to participate in the political process and gives them the digital freedom to exercise their fundamental rights."

About Digital Freedom: Digital technology enables literally anyone and everyone to be a creator, an innovator or an artist -- to produce music, to create cutting-edge videos and photos, and to share their creative work. Digital technology empowers individuals to enjoy these new works when, where, and how they want, and to participate in the artistic process. These are basic freedoms that must be protected and nurtured. The Digital Freedom campaign is dedicated to defending the rights of students, artists, innovators, and consumers to create and make lawful use of new technologies free of unreasonable government restrictions and without fear of costly and abusive lawsuits.
