Leo Hamalian honored - Brief Article
Literary Review, Wntr, 2002
On October 28, 2000, TLR Adivsory Editor Leo Hamalian was honored by the Armenian General Benevolent Union for his thirty year's of service as editor of Ararat, an Armenian-American literary quarterly. During his term as editor, Leo has encouraged great numbers of young Armenian-American authors who, typically, had their first publications in Ararat, and then went on to successful careers outside its pages.
Tributes at the luncheon in Leo's honor came from poets Peter Balakian and Diana Der Hovanessian, playwright Nishan Parlakian, novelists Nancy Kricorian and Marjorie Housepian, essayist Michael Arlen, librarian and university president Vartan Gregorian, and Leo's coeditors and partners on many publishing projects, James V. Hatch and Edmund Volpe.
To these many deserved accolades, the editors of The Literary Review wish to add their appreciation for Leo's many contributions over the years. Leo is the sort of Advisory Editor who not only advises when requested, but also produces a steady and valued stream of ideas for issues, articles, and authors. The editors of TLR thank him for these, and for the constructive comments he sends along on each issue as it appears. Fortunately, Leo's deserved tributes do not coincide with retirement: he remains editor of Ararat and he remains a valued Advisory Editor of TLR. As they say in Armenian, "Abrir!" (Live long!)
