Referendum day 2 - Poem
Literary Review, Wntr, 2002 by Peter McCarey
Referendum Day 2. Was it Kelvin or Clerk-Maxwell, Satie or Tobias Hume orchestrated this foregathering on the darker side of Metis (one of Jupiter's wee satellites), up to our ears in aspic, re-rehearsing Brigadoon? It would seem (though I can't say what Dunce or Watt or Michael Scot concocted the theology) that we're staying here in Corkerhill West--"A Tibetan assembly"-- until our heirs decide, like, if we are or if we're not. I mean, severally and jointly are we a nation or a neep? (Neep! Neep!) This thing's not working! Yogi Bear and his cheap laser link to the front page of the Herald ... Tea break's over: back on your heids.
Peter McGarey has published extensively in magazines and anthologies. His most recent collection of poetry is In the Metaforest (2000). His other books of poetry include Town Shanties, The Devil in the Driving Mirror, and Double Click. His highly-successful long poem, Tantris, was published in a special issue of Lines Review (1997).
