The living dark - Poem

Literary Review,  Wntr, 2002  by Aonghas MacNeacail

the living dark

though it's long since i first met you, darkness
you are still a cat to me
   pervasive, dark and secret
you are snake, you are weed

   i hear your cunning purr
   pretend to be sheep
   and the way you slither
through the closed door of my eyes
your foliage like clouds without light
   wrapping me, wrapping me
in the meagre cell of my own surmise
   then when i have assumed
   that my imagination's dumb
   you release my bogeymen
