Alternative church
National Catholic Reporter, June 13, 2008 by Sally Butler
When NCR arrives, I usually open it uneasily. Will I be plunged anew into a frenzy of impatience and frustration? Not from reading the May 30 issue. First, Dan and Sheila Daley of Call to Action are as certain as I am of an alternative community growing within the church. Let Cardinal Edward Egan, Michael Novak and William Donohue cackle on, condemning all who disagree with them. The real church is quietly growing.
And then, there in the same issue, was Bishop Geoffrey Robinson, intelligent and compassionate, urging the careful study of power and sex in our church. His book, Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church, is a lucid study of the long road of corruption among bishops, which has led to this present horrifying slaughter of the innocents, still a burning issue that won't die. Some of us in Brooklyn, N.Y., were fortunate enough to hear him speak recently. Our hearts were surely burning within us. Read his book, dear friends, and hear him speak if you can. Bishop Robinson is an important part of the new alternative church.
