The Gift

The Gift

   I drive the ocean causeway.
   It is evening
   and a haze has settled in the distance
   The elegance of brown pelicans
   drifts
      on the air.
   I watch them....
   For that one moment
   my gaze
   embraces what they will never
   know--
   beauty
   simple as the wind.
