Joyful noise

National Catholic Reporter,  Feb 9, 2007

A choir group from Cuo Bac Church in Hanoi, Vietnam, holds a regular Thursday evening practice Nov. 30. The group, made up of Catholics in their early 20s, is committed to raising money for leprosariums in northern Vietnam. Pope Benedict XVI hosted the first-ever visit, of a prime minister from Vietnam's communist government Jan.

25. The meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung marks an important step in improving ties between the Vatican and Vietnam, but it's unlikely to lead immediately to full diplomatic relations, a senior Vatican diplomat speaking on background told NCR. He said stumbling blocks remain on both sides: The Vatican wants greater autonomy in the appointment of bishops, while Vietnamese Communists are concerned about the implications of greater religious freedom for maintaining their monopoly on power. The long-term trajectory is toward improved relations, this diplomat said, but as with China, it's important to be patient. About 6 million of Vietnam's 84 million people are Catholic.
