2,831 prisoners

National Catholic Reporter,  Jan 12, 2007

> To mark the country's 59th anniversary of independence from British colonialism Jan. 4, Myanmar's ruling junta granted amnesty to 2,831 prisoners "whose moral behavior and spiritual values have improved and changed for the better." Most were petty thieves and common criminals, but according to monitoring groups, about 20 were from among the 1,100 political prisoners held in Myanmar's jails.
