'Buddha boy' reappears

National Catholic Reporter,  Jan 12, 2007

KATHMANDU, Nepal -- A Nepalese teenager, believed by some to be a reincarnation of Gautama Buddha, has reappeared in eastern Nepal after vanishing for nine months. Ram Bahadur Bomjan, 16, was spotted Dec. 24 in a remote, dense forest about 95 miles east of here.

Bomjan disappeared in March from the forest, where he had reportedly been meditating under a tree without food or water for almost 10 months. "I've been wandering in the forests since then," the boy was quoted in media reports. "I'm engaged in devotion that will continue for six years."

Throngs of onlookers and devotees crowded the site to see the boy sitting in a meditation position. A local TV station showed people pressing their palms together and bowing their heads in reverence. Before his disappearance, an estimated 100,000 people from Nepal and neighboring India flocked to see Bomjan in meditation.
