SYDNEY, Australia -- Organizers of the 2008 World Youth Day events in Australia have introduced a four-tiered registration fee system based on national income classifications developed by the World Bank.
Pilgrims from the wealthiest countries purchasing the most comprehensive package--which includes accommodations and meals in a church facility or private home and local transportation from July 14 to July 20--will pay $308. Pilgrims from the poorest countries will pay about $38 for the same package.
Group registrations are to begin in March. Organizers say they are expecting up to 500,000 pilgrims, including up to 125,000 international visitors.
