Communion of Saints

Communion of Saints
Roofboards open like double
doors.
Joists lift up to make a way
for all of heaven to stroll through.
Prophets, saints, angels enjoy
the view down here, no less
curious about us than we ourselves
are curious about the lay of the
land
on their side. They study the
woodpile
touch the clock's hands, test
planed
floorboards beneath their feet.
Soon enough they nod to us, their
hands
clasped behind their backs, they
turn, returning the way they came
roofboards resuming roofboard
duty
of keeping out rain, protecting
from cold, deflecting lightning to
well-placed
rods, all ready to cooperate, to
prove
no obstacle if ever called on again.
