The rich and poor

National Catholic Reporter,  May 16, 2008  by Tony Janonotta

The letter to the editor titled "Wealth not a problem" (NCR, April 18) is so off the mark as to be unbelievable. The early church in Acts and the encyclicals of numerous popes have provided guidance on the inordinate accumulation of all treasure: time, talent and money. The letter writer takes the typically myopic view of a prosperous capitalist, frightened and fighting to maintain what he's "earned." We earn nothing in this world. All we have is a gift of God to be used for the common good of all humanity, not just the person accumulating inordinate wealth.

The tired argument of the wealthy throwing table scraps to the poor and justifying their beneficence is to spin scripture and corrupt the Word. The notion of job creation in the letter writer's capitalistic cocoon is dissipating before his eyes. Third World poverty may be exacerbated by despots. So how is the new First World poverty to be justified? Maybe Bill Gates and Warren Buffett should give all their wealth away. Wouldn't that scare the hell out of the frightened wealthy? Or maybe it would jump start a return to the early church of Acts.
