The Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery has included in its collection a photograph of Holy Cross Fr. Theodore Hesburgh clasping hands with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during a 1964 civil rights rally in Chicago. Hesburgh, president emeritus of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, was a charter member of the U.S.

Commission on Civil Rights, serving from 1957 to 1972.
