Lloyd Richards (c), the theater director and educator who was often described as "the most important African-American on Broadway," directed the award-winning play, A Raisin In The Sun, and is shown with the production's principals, including Phillip Rose (producer), Lorraine Hansberry (playwright), David Cogan (producer) and Sidney Poitier, who portrayed the character of Walter Lee Younger.

Richards, who worked at three major the atrical institutions--the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Center, as dean of the Yale School of Drama and as artistic director of the Yale Repertory Theatre--also helped to shape the careers of other playwrights, including August Wilson. Richards died on June 29, his 87th birthday.
