Mo'Nique

Ebony,  Nov, 2007  by Theresa McMiller,  Stephanie Johnson-Canty

I love Mo'Nique ("Mo'Nique" Bare, Bold & Brazen," Aug. 2007). She represents me as a PHAT Black woman in Hollywood. We all know that Hollywood doesn't like its glamorous women to be fat. So I do give both of them had respect for accomplishing the impossible. Mo'Nique is trying to help every pretty, hot and thick woman in America to have self-esteem and fashion sense, and she is influencing us to demand respect. When it comes to Mo'Nique, you have to take the bitter with the sweet.

Mo'Nique is inadvertently promoting poor health by glamorizing obesity and reinforcing "big is beautiful." Is she not aware of the long-term side effects of obesity? Is she not aware of the increased incidence of coronary heart disease and diabetes within the African-American community due to obesity? She needs to reevaluate the negative image that is being communicated to her long list of adoring fans.
