Ebony, Nov, 2006
Eight-time Grammy Award-winner Natalie Cole marks yet another impressive milestone with an eclectic mix of classic pop, R&B and rock songs on her 20th studio recording, LEAVIN.' The 12-song set is Cole's interpretation of classic hits, including Aretha Franklin's "Day Dreaming" and the Isley Brothers' "Don't Say Goodnigbt (It's Time For Love)." Leavin,' for which Cole collaborated closely with famed R&B producer Dallas Austin (TLC, Boyz II Men, Madonna, Janet Jackson, etc,), also surprises fans with a wide range of songs by contemporary artists, including Fiona Apple's Criminal and Shelby Lynne's "Leavin,'" the title tune.
The recording underscores Cole's musicianship oral stunning vocals, and pots a fresh twist on some great music. "There's a lot of Jove and vibe on these tracks, and I think that conies through loud and clear," she says. Indeed, Cole's latest musical statement shows her coming back to contemporary material with the passion of a new artist and the skill of an artist very much at the peak of her powers.
