Selecting the right doctor for you

WHEN it is time to choose a new doctor, it can be one of the most important decisions you can make--in fact, your life may depend on the physician you choose. But many people have no idea what should be considered when initiating the process of choosing the right doctor who will take care of them and their family.

The American Medical Association and other medical organizations suggest the following list of steps and questions to ask when making the critical decision of selecting a new doctor.

* If, like millions of employees, you are in a managed care plan (HMO, PPO, etc.), carefully inspect the list of doctors who practice within that system. If you are not in a group plan, ask family and friends for suggestions, or contact local medical associations.

* Ask about the potential candidate's credentials, including academic history and board certifications.

* Once you determine a potential candidate, ask about the number of patients booked per hour. If there are too many patients to see, then you might not be able to get enough of the doctor's attention.

* Observe the office to see how the doctor and the staff interact with patients.

* Talk with the doctor. This might be the only way to really find out if he or she is right for you. Ask about office hours, if you can call when you have a question, and how he/she continues to keep up with the latest medical developments.

* Ask about the expected waiting time when you arrive for your appointment.

* Ask about his or her availability if there is an emergency, and if he or she works with a backup physician.

* Get information about the doctor's hospital affiliations, which is an indication about his or her credentials.

These steps serve as a simple guideline to help when it comes time to choose a new doctor. Medical organizations urge you to take your time, get as much information as possible and study the candidates carefully.
