Young, Gifted & Black
Ebony, August, 2006 by Essex C. Hutton, Sr.
Since education is my passion, I was extremely pleased by your article, "Young, Gifted and Black Students Thrive Despite the Odds" (June 2006). I was particularly drawn to the students who were Mensa members. I've been a member of Mensa for more than 30 years, and, until I read your article, I'd never read about the achievements of other Black Mensa members.
Your article correctly contradicts the widely held belief that Black children are inherently inferior, mentally. Many Blacks also hold this opinion. Also, the positive, informative nature of the article lets our children know that it's quite acceptable to be smart and to achieve.
Your article has created a setting for hope and accomplishments for our young people. Let's hope that the rest of us do what's necessary to bring their successes to fruition.
