5 questions for: Ne-Yo

Ebony,  July, 2006

Born Shaffer C. Smith, he's already been christened "the one" in the music world. The character Neo from The Matrix is the inspiration behind his moniker. The singer/songwriter co-wrote Mario's smash hit "Let Me Love You" And he's also written for B2K, Faith Evans, Musiq and Mary J. Bilge, but he saved a little something for himself with his debut album, In My Own Words. His singles "Stay" "So Sick" and "When You're Mad" are topping charts and allowing the world to get to know this masterful young artist. Writing at an early age, his passion and spirit shine through with his melodic vocals and heartfelt lyrics that are piercing the hearts of listeners. The Def Jam recording artist took some time to talk with Ebony about his new role as the man out front.

1. You've written songs for some of the most popular artists around, now it's your turn to be in the spotlight. How does that feel?

Being in the spotlight is a bit surreal. I was so accustomed to being behind the scenes that being recognized in public was a new experience. I am definitely feeling, more comfortable signing autographs. It's great to see the fans who are touched by your words and for them to know that you're the one who wrote the song.

2. Can you explain the meaning behind the song "Stay"?

In "Stay" people think I'm talking about a woman, but I'm actually talking about my love of music. I'm asking music to "stay with me" because when everything else might be going haywire in my life, music can always bring me back to a quiet, peaceful place.

3. You have your own production company Compound Entertainment. What is your role with the company now and how do you juggle those responsibilities with your newfound duties as a recording artist?

I work with the new producers, write and meet with artists. How do I juggle the responsibilities? I don't remember the last time I had more than two hours sleep, but I'm loving every minute. It's a real creative role.

4. When writing songs, how do you decide which songs you will keep for yourself? Have you ever had a song that you wished you'd kept for yourself?

I write whatever is in me at that time. There are songs that I have loved, but they weren't for me to sing. Whenever I write a song, I know there will be inspiration for another song that very next moment.

5. What more should fans expect from Ne-Yo?

I just want to keep giving my fans music and words they can relate to and feel. I hope that one of my songs can conjure up memories that are dear to them. I would love for one of my songs to be able to bring back moment in time.
