Liberia's president

Ebony,  July, 2006  by Ashlee R. Norris,  Kanette Worlds

As a Black college student, I really enjoyed the article, "Africa's Historic 'First': President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf" (April 2006). I admire President Johnson-Sirleaf for all the obstacles she had to go through in order to get where she is today. For someone like me, this gives me encouragement and motivation to strive for whatever I want to accomplish in life. As any other college student, I have overcome many obstacles in my college career to get where I am now.

Knowing that a female has accomplished something as great as becoming president of a country has given me hope that maybe a woman could become president here in the United States. By Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf becoming president, I hope women everywhere are inspired to do whatever they set their minds to do and use her story as inspiration.

Thank you for featuring President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in the April issue of Ebony. Her election as Africa's first Black female president is a triumph, not just in Africa, but for Blacks living in America and the Caribbean and other parts of the world. As prosperous as America may be, it's inspiring that a continent that is continuously overlooked by the U.S. government was able to place a woman in a lead position.
