> LOU RAWLS, the legendary performer with the smooth, velvety voice, created a legacy that included his efforts to send thousands of Blacks to college through the annual United Negro College Fund telethon. The event, which began in 1979, has raised more than $250 million for scholarships. The multiple Grammy Award winner who released more than 70 albums died in January at age 72 after a bout with cancer.
