House of Dereon
Ebony, Feb, 2006
Over the past few years, the name Tina Knowles has become synonymous with awe-inspiring, traffic-stopping fashion. A visionary designer from Galveston, Texas, Knowles grew up surrounded by prolific style and innovative fashion. Inspired by her mother, Agnes Dereon, a professional seamstress who catered to private clients, Tina's style constantly evolved by experimenting with different patterns and re-designing traditional clothing pieces to create new and stunning looks for herself and those around her.
"I don't know anybody who loves high fashion more than I do," admits Knowles, mother and stylist for entertainment superstar Beyonce Knowles. "However, you should still be able to have access to beautiful clothes if you are on a budget." Affordable couture? For some, the very thought is an oxymoron, yet it is the mission of the exciting House of Dereon, the new fashion line created by the celebrity mother-and-daughter team. Having made its stellar debut in 2005, the House of Dereon line features trend-setting women's contemporary styles, including standout jeans, that accentuate full figures and are consistent with the clothes Beyonce loves to wear. "House of Dereon is named after my grandmother, so it's a celebration of three generations," Beyonce says. "We wanted to take elements from my grandmother's legacy--the beaded lace, lush colors, fine fabrics--and mix them with clothes from my mother's generation and my generation."
