In celebration of the 20th anniversary of its emergence on the world music stage, LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO releases another stellar recording, Long Walk to Freedom (Heads Up International). On this collection of the group's classic songs, which also celebrates the end of apartheid in the group's native South Africa, the talented ensemble continues to mesmerize listeners with its earthy harmonies.
There are guest performances by Melissa Etheridge and Joe McBride on the poignant "Diamonds On the Soles of her Shoes," Sarah McLachlan on "Homeless," Emmylou Harris on "Amazing Grace/Nearer My God to Thee," and Lucky Dube and Hugh Masekela on "Shosholoza." Also performing on the CD are Zap Mama, Taj Mahal and Natalie Merchant. This recording, produced by Ladysmith founder and musical director Joseph Shabalala, is truly a collector's item.
