60th anniversary issue
Ebony, Feb, 2006 by Kecia L. McCoy, Constance D. Woodson, Nancy McGill
I think your 60th anniversary cover (Nov. 2005) is beautiful, displaying the Academy Award winners Denzel Washington, Halle Berry and Jamie Foxx. But, I was very disappointed that the first Black Academy Award winner, Sidney Poitier, was not on the cover along with these incredible pioneers. It is very important to remember that Mr. Poitier was the first Black person to ever receive an Academy Award. This is a very important event in American history, as well as for the 60th anniversary edition of Ebony magazine.

Editor's Note: As we pointed out in "The Insider" (Nov. 2005), Mr. Poitier was the first person we contacted when we decided to do a cover of Black Academy Award winners who had been honored as "Best Actor" or "Best Actress." He declined to participate, indicating that his duties, at the time, as the Bahamas Ambassador to Japan would not allow him to join Denzel, Halle and Jamie.
Thank you for the extraordinary depiction of class and style represented on the cover of the November 2005 issue, featuring Denzel, Halle and Jamie ("No last names necessary").
From the first glance of the "eye candy" cover featuring these three superb Best Actor Oscar winners (Denzel and Jamie, could not have looked any better!), I instantly became one proud "Sista." Not only are they blessed with gifted acting talent, they also seem humble and grateful for their achievements.
Ebony, continue to reflect on Black contributions that make our world better. Happy 60th anniversary, Ebony magazine!! And may God bless the Johnson family during this time of bereavement.
