Denzel, Halle & Jamie

Ebony,  Jan, 2006  by Robyn Hamlin,  Janice Butler,  Corine Ladson

I recently purchased the 60th anniversary issue of Ebony magazine (Nov. 2005). And in my opinion, this is the most inspiring issue of any magazine that I've ever read. The reason that I am personally inspired is because I'm a 32-year-old African-American screenwriter, and I can honestly relate to every writer, actor and entertainer in America who's ever had dreams of making it to Hollywood.

There have been so many times in my writing career that I've honestly wanted to give up! And prior to reading the November issue of Ebony, I believe that I had. Following your dreams is a necessity in life. And regardless of the obstacles that you face along the way, you're somehow always inspired by even the remote possibility of achieving those dreams one day. For me, that remote possibility lives within the lives of the three Oscar winners on the cover of November issue of Ebony! To have a dream is essential, but to have a role model is imperative!

Thank you, Denzel, Halle and Jamie!

I really enjoyed your 60th anniversary issue. It reminded me of when I was a little girl growing up in the 1960s. I was happy and sad to reflect upon all the great heroes and sheroes of our past. So many have passed on. But all, including Mr. John H. Johnson, have left a legacy of greatness for us all to follow.

I have just received my November 2005 issue of Ebony. I will keep this issue and hope that in the next 60 years it will enlighten some of my younger family members of where we came from and where they may be at that time in their life. With this issue, there is no other history book needed.
