Mayor-elect Richard G. Hatcher acknowledges supporters after the historic election on November 7, 1967, that made him the first Black mayor of Gary, Ind. He and Carl B. Stokes of Cleveland were elected on the same day, making them the first Black individuals to become mayors of major cities.
