Simone

Ebony,  March, 2008

With the chops of a Broadway performer, Simone, who is no stranger to the stage with roles in Rentand Aida, pays tribute to her mother, the legendary Nina Simone, with renditions of her mom's classic songs. Simone on Simone (Organic Entertainment/Koch), carries the weight of heavy, contemplative standards such as "Black Is the Color of My True Lover's Hair;' "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free," "Feeling Good" and "Work Song," all of which are never too hefty for Simone's powerful vocals. She also includes a very personal song that she wrote for her mother, "Child In Me," as well as a heartfelt introduction by the late vocalist on "Music For Lovers."
