A Sword Among Lions
Ebony, March, 2008
In A Sword Among Lions (Amistad, $35), Paula J. Giddings returns with a sweeping and timely biographical narrative about Ida B. Wells, who led the nation's first campaign against lynching. Tens of thousands of African-Americans were lynched leading up to Wells' campaign in the late-1800s. Giddings, the Elizabeth Woodson 1922 Professor in Afro-American Studies at Smith College, delivers an 816-page look at Wells, a paragon of American history. Giddings also is the author of the groundbreaking book When and Where I Enter, which traces the activist history of Black women in America.
