Memorable Photo

Ebony,  March, 2008  by P.M. Thomas

One of my favorite parts of EBONY magazine is "Memorable Photo." The picture of Dr. King with his wife and child in the January 2008 issue brought me to tears. I was born in Montgomery, Ala. My mama died there in 1956, and I left Montgomery, vowing to never return--and I never have. But that picture brought me to tears because I remember the church. I feel like I remember that scene.

I remember the state capitol in the background. You see, my mother tried to put me in a better school. I would walk up those very steps, cutting through the capitol grounds, on my way to Booker T. Washington school.

That photograph brought back memories of the White-only water fountains and the segregated lunch counters. I know Montgomery has probably changed, but I cannot, will not, ever go back because, for me, it's a bad memory. But, I will always love Dr. King and people like Rosa Parks because they were positive instruments of change. They changed Montgomery and the world. I am so glad that the both of them came through Montgomery.

Thank you for the article.
