Immaculate dating

Ebony,  Feb, 2008  by Tai Beauchamp

The anticipation of finally linking up (or even reconnecting for the 10th time) with that "very special" or "hopefully very special" someone can be daunting.

Will he find me as attractive as he did when we first met?

Will she notice the small scar near the base of my earlobe?

When it comes to deciding the perfect outfit for the occasion ... well, unless you have a tailor, stylist or manservant on call, magically waiting to pop out of your closet, the task of deciding what to wear can cast gray skies over what should be a rosy day. Heed these ready-set-dress tips from style expert and iVillage.com correspondent Tai Beauchamp, and look lovely for the occasion.

If you're going ... Out for a romantic dinner:

Focus on your upper body. Accentuate your attire from the waist up since most of the evening will be spent sitting across from each other. How? Wear a slightly lower-cut V or scoop-neck blouse or dress. Accessorize with one piece of statement making jewelry, like a bold ring, bracelet or necklace.

To meet the family for the first time:

Don't go overboard trying to impress. Save the Gothic cat eye makeup and bright-red lips for another event. Keep your makeup light and fresh. Wear something comfortable that also reflects your personality. Stay away from anything you'd wear to the office or club.

To a sporting event:

Do dress up ... a little. Wear hip-hugging, wide-leg jeans with low-heeled boots or shoes instead of sneakers. Score extra points: If you (or your date) are really into a team, wear a team jersey or colors.

To a museum, gallery or cultural event:

It's all about the eyes. To create an alluring gaze (at the art or at each other), dab a soft, shimmering pewter shadow (perfect for any skin tone) onto your lids. Line your top lash line with a black kohl liner and add three coats of Lancome Definicils mascara in black. Finish your look with a rosy flesh-toned lip color and a gentle coral blush.

To a black-tie affair:

Do punctuate with color. The days of standard "black" frocks are over. And while black usually flatters all shapes and sizes, this sea son (and next), opt for a brighter-hued, floor-length gown in magenta, green or orange. Prop your hair into a low bun or tuck shorter lengths behind your ear. The result? Instant glamour that's sure to keep his (and everyone else's) attention.

Anywhere:

Embrace comfort and feeling good. if you love the way you look and feel ... so will he!

gentlemen's tips

Remember ... Button-downs work for most occasions.

Once considered a stiff guy's staple, the traditional dress shirt easily floats from the boardroom to a less formal dinner to an evening at the movies. Consider a checkered or plaid print instead of a solid blue when it's just you and your special woman (sans colleague). Ties are not necessary ... well, unless it's a black tie.

A fresh haircut is essential.

Every man's hair grows differently. If your hair has more puff than a down jacket, shampoo, condition and trim it before your special event.

Be shined and well-heeled.

The truth: Women love a man who understands the importance of his foundation. Make a lasting impression by getting your shoes gently shined and/or wearing new, leather-soled shoes with good heels.

Manicures are not just for the ladies.

A man with pristine pointers is usually gentle in his touch. Get a manicure before a date, and ask to be buffed as opposed to polished with a shiny top coat. A buff and dull top coat is masculine and equally protecting.
