Sickle cell disease

Ebony,  Nov, 2006  by Gina M. Kreuser,  Shenelle Penno

Thank you for the article, "One Family's Struggle With Sickle Cell Disease" (July 2006). I have long felt that there is a lack of attention to a disease that affects so many people in such a devastating way.

I am a 42-year-old woman who has long suffered. I don't believe people know what it is truly like to live with excruciating pain on a daily basis.

EBONY, keep doing a great job of informing our people ... I just wanted to personally let you all know I really appreciated the article about the Simpson family.

I can say I too know firsthand about this "devil" of a disease that has altered my family's life. I am 35 years old and have only been married for five years now. My husband is 37 and has bad crises all the time. He's always in and out of the hospital and he has transfusions every three months, if not more! We have a little girl. She also has sickle cell, so the hospital seems like a home to us.

God bless you.
