Hollywood's sexiest new leading men

Ebony,  Dec, 2005  by Zondra Hughes

HANDSOME, aren't they? Never before has sex appeal come in so many variations. But if you look closer, well beyond Hill Harper's bedroom eyes, or Idris Elba's bad-boy persona, or Tony Okungbowa's addictive charisma, or Michael Ealy's hypnotic gaze, or Daniel Sunjata's choirboy dimples, or Rockmond Dunbar's massive pecks, you'll discover that these sexy Brothers also possess serious talent and boundless potential. Here's a sneak peek at Hollywood's next generation of sexy leading men.

Idris Elba

Hometown: Hackney, London, England

Where you've seen him: Idris Elba has appeared in numerous television shows, including Girlfriends, Soul Food and CSI: Miami. His breakout role was that of Russell (Stringer) Bell in HBO's gritty drama The Wire, followed by the HBO television movie Sometimes in April. On the big screen, Idris has appeared in The Gospel and will next appear in The Reaping, a thriller about suspected biblical plagues.

If I weren't an actor I'd be: "Involved in the entertainment business, probably in music. 'Big Dris' [his stage name when he spinned records on the London club scene] will always be my pseudonym, that's my alter ego."

I've got to tell you: "I'm a kick-boxer; I've been doing it for years. I was going to fight professionally, but as an actor I can't mess up my face! It's a talent, but it's also a sport for me. I also do a little bit of photography. I love it. I have a good eye, and in the future I would like to release a book of photos of the things that I've seen during my travels."

Heartwarming fact: "I act for a living, so my personality is very different from the characters that I portray. I am introverted It may come from being an only child, I will never be the life of the party ... I like to observe people."

Daniel Sunjata

Hometown: Evanston, Ill. (a suburb of Chicago)

Where you've seen him: Daniel Sunjata currently stars as firefighter and ladies' man Franeo Rivera on the hit series Rescue Me (FX). He has also appeared on Sex and the City and Law& Order: SVU. Most recently, Daniel portrayed Langston Hughes in the film Brother to Brother. His next film project is The Devil Wears Prada.

If I weren't an actor I'd be: "A professor of comparative philosophy of religion. I'd get involved with any profession which aims to create more favorable social outcomes for the common person."

I've got to tell you: "That I really consider my profession to be an act of service, and, in that sense, I feel the whole culture of celebrity is kind of backwards. In our work it is we who celebrate you, not the other way around."

Heartwarming fact." "I have a gift for inspiring people to do positive things."

Michael Ealy

Hometown: Silver Spring, Maryland

Where you've seen him: Michael Ealy's breakout role was that of Ricky Nash in the MGM hit films Barbershop and Barbershop Z Back in Business; he also starred opposite DMX in the film Never Die Alone. On the small screen, Ealy co-starred with Halle Berry in the critically acclaimed telepic Their Eyes Were Watching God. Ealy can now be seen on the Showtime original television series, Sleeper Cell.

If I weren't an actor I'd be: "Teaching ... when I was in college, I tutored high school students in reading and writing."

I've get to tell you: "I'm in no rush to be a leading man ... I'm just going to try to work my way up."

Heartwarming tact: In the leaner years, Ealy bought his grandmother her very first washer and dryer.

Hill Harper

Hometown: Iowa City, Iowa

Where you've seen him: Hill Harper has appeared on several dramatic television series, including City of Angels and The Handler. Harper also starred in the HBO film Lackawanna Blues. His big screen credits include Beloved, He Got Game and several award-winning independent films. Hill is currently featured in the new season of CSI:NY He makes his literary debut with his novel. Letters to a Young Brother, next year.

If I weren't an actor I'd be: "Working in the public sector, most likely in politics."

I've got to tell you: "I am a certified racecar driver."

Heartwarming fact: Hill volunteers with the Big Brother/Big Sisters organization in Los Angeles, and he's passionate about the plight of the disenfranchised. "I'm a big proponent of trying to get the young, urban kids to go to school and educate themselves because the world offers a wealth of opportunities."

Tony Okungbowa

Hometown: Raised in London, England, and Lagos, Nigeria.

Where you've seen him: Best known as the charismatic resident disc jockey on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Tony Okungbowa is a classically trained actor, who has appeared in TV's NYPD Blue, ArliSSS and The X Files. Okungbowa is currently filming Poseidon (a Warner Bros. film), which is a remake of the 1972 movie, The Poseidon Adventure.

If I weren't a disc jockey I'd be: "Working on my acting and focusing on opportunities for the upcoming pilot season. Most people don't realize that I was an actor long before I became a DJ!"
