Getting to the root: hair care for sisters

Ebony,  Dec, 2005  by Dirk Evans

q: "Santa has found me a man! My crush invited me to a Christmas party and I want to change my look. I've been wearing braids for a year [my hair is naturally coarse], but now I want a relaxer. How do I know which relaxer strength to use? Should I use mild, normal or super? Help!"

--Santa's Little Helper, Nashville. Tenn.

a: Dear Santa's Little Helper:

"I always look at the edges first. If the edges are coarse, normally I will go with a normal/regular perm. When I'm doing someone's relaxing treatment for the first time, I aim low, always considering the condition of the hair first. If you don't know the proper strength to use, start with a mild perm, for you can always increase the strength the next time."
