Dr. Ben Carson - Letters To The Editor

Ebony,  March, 2003  by Bobbie D. Carr

Thank you so much for the article, "Dr. Ben Carson: Top Surgeon's Life-And-Death Struggle With Prostate Cancer" (Jan. 2003). After learning of his diagnosis with prostate cancer, I like others, prayed for his recovery. He is truly a remarkable man, one who has dedicated his life to making life better for others. His work as a pediatric neurosurgeon has resulted in many medical miracles. How humbling to know that he prays before every surgery. Prayer is a power-thing.

I was so moved after reading of how he wasn't concerned about himself, but of how his illness could possibly affect other people. Of how he knew it would be okay, no matter what happened, even if he died. He is a man who really seems to have everything in perspective. Cancer can be a scary thing, especially considering the potential it has to take one out. My father's only sister died of cancer. Sometimes we have a tendency to appear unafraid of death until it confronts us face to face.

Dr. Ben Carson is an extraordinary human being. It is no wonder God has blessed him with gifted hands. Thank you, EBONY, for bringing the stories that touch our lives and give us hope.
