DR. HENRY L. JOHNSON was appointed superintendent of education by the Mississippi board of education. As state superintendent, he advises the board, governor and legislature on the financial needs of elementary and secondary education institutions and is responsible for developing a general education budget for the state.
Dr. Johnson is the second African-American to hold this post. T.W. Cardozo was elected by the people of Mississippi during the Reconstruction era, and served as state superintendent between 1874 and 1876. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Johnson was associate state superintendent in the North Carolina department of public instruction. He is a graduate of Livingstone College in Salisbury. He received a master's degree in teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a doctorate in school administration from North Carolina State University. Born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., he is married and has two sons and a daughter.
