Caption: ON PRESIDENT BUSH'S AFRICAN TRIP, as on President Clinton's African trip (June 1998), EBONY was the only accredited African-American magazine. Senior Editor Kevin Chappell and photographer Frederick L. Watkins Jr. were in the press pool on Air Force One, and were the only journalists granted a one-on-one interview. Watkins made the following photos for EBONY and Jet (August 4) of President Bush, pictured with Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade, denouncing slavery on Goree Island, (below) conferring with Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, and checking out the August issue of EBONY.
