American Library Association president - Speaking Of People

DR. CARLA D. HAYDEN is the fourth Black president of the American Library Association. (The first Black president was Clara Jones, who was elected in 1976.) The executive director of Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore was the first chairperson of the association's Spectrum Initiative, which encourages minorities to become librarians.

She was named Librarian of the Year in 1995 by Library Journal and was named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women in 1996 and 2003 by the Maryland Daily Record. Dr. Hayden also taught at the University of Maryland, Long Island University and Columbia University. The ALA president graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago with a bachelor's degree in political science and received master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago in library science. Hayden is single and lives in Baltimore.
