CNA presidents and CEOs - Speaking Of People - Brief Article

JAMES R. LEWIS (r.) and ROBERT L. McGINNIS are the first Black presidents and chief executive officers of divisions of the Chicago-based CNA insurance companies. African-American executives head two of the three divisions of CNA that account for more than 90 percent of the insurance company's business. Lewis has been president and chief executive officer of CNA's property and casualty operations for one year. McGinnis has been president and chief executive officer of CNA's life and group operations since June.

Lewis is responsible for CNA's $7.2 billion worldwide property and casualty business, global specialty lines, risk management and sections of the technology operations. Lewis has a bachelor's degree in mathematics, with a minor in chemistry from Berea College. He and his wife, Tina, live in North Barrington, Ill. They have four adult children and five grandchildren.

McGinnis is responsible for the strategic direction and profitable growth of CNA's $2.6 billion individual life, institutional markets and group businesses. The former executive vice president and COO of group operations has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Highland Park, Ill., with their 15-month-old daughter, Lauren.
