Women on top - Letters to the editor - Letter to the Editor

Ebony,  August, 2003  by Adeyemi Adebiyi

While I applaud your article, "Women On Top: Making More Money Than Your Man" (May 2003), for being right on the button, I think we should not forget that some of our high-earning Sisters steadfastly refuse to date a Brother who earns relatively less. The prevailing mood among these women seems to be that it is twice as hard for them to succeed in the corporate world as they have to grapple with racism as well as sexism. They boldly assert that if they can make it against those odds, so should a Brother. It is hardly surprising then that they gravitate toward Brothers who earn comparable salaries or more, and in places where the pool of Black high-earners is small, some Sisters cast their nets wider and date across the color line. In the extreme, some Sisters are weary of being manipulated by Brothers who might see them as a meal ticket.

Personally, I suspect that very few relationships like the ones documented in your article get off the ground. Here in London, I have female friends who just would not "go there." Nevertheless, couples who already find themselves in this situation would no doubt do well to follow the advice the article gives.
