First Black president of Indiana University - Speaking Of People - Adam W. Herbert Jr - Brief Article

ADAM W. HERBERT JR. is the first Black president of Indiana University, a 183-year-old institution with eight campuses and nearly 100,000 students. Dr. Herbert was most recently founding executive director of the Florida Center for Public Policy and Leadership Development at the University of North Florida.

He was the chancellor of the State University System of Florida from 1998 to 2001 and president of the University of North Florida from 1989 to 1998. President Herbert led Florida's Governor Jeb Bush's transition team in 1998 and taught political science at Howard University from 1977 to 1978. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Southern California. Dr. Herbert received his Ph.D. in urban affairs and public administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He and his wife, Karen, live in Bloomington, Ind.
