She was associate and interim athletic director at Tennessee State before becoming director. The award-winning coach was named Ohio Valley Conference Co-coach of the Year in 1990 and Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994. Phillips graduated with a bachelor's degree in economies and business education, and she a master's degree in administration and supervision from Tennessee State. The trailblazing coach and her husband, Michael Phillips, live in Nashville with their sons, Micah and Kyle.
