Celebrating 40 years - This Issue
Theory Into Practice, Wntr, 2002 by Anita Woolfolk Hoy
IN 1962 THEORY INTO PRACTICE was founded by the College of Education of The Ohio State University. Its first editor was the eminent educational scholar, Egon Guba. The opening page of the inaugural issue stated the journal's mission:
Committed to the point of view that there is an integral relationship between theory and practice for the Administrator, Teacher, [and] Board Member in the public schools.
As Theory Into Practice (TIP) celebrates 40 years of continuous publication, we affirm this commitment.
Initially, TIP was published five times a year; however, beginning with Volume 19 in 1980, TIP published four issues a year (including a 25th-anniversary issue in 1987). These 179 issues have brought together some of the most articulate and thoughtful educational theorists and practitioners to discuss topics ranging from technology to teacher education, from school reform to nonverbal communication, from child and adolescent development to curriculum theory.
A glance at the themes for Volumes 1 to 40 shows that TIP has been on the forefront of educational inquiry. In fact, the first issue was devoted to "Teaching Machines and Language Laboratories." Since that first issue, TIP has published four other issues on technology in teaching and learning. Also during its first year of publication, TIP targeted the "Dilemma of Year-Round School Operation," a topic that could have been drawn from current research journals. In its second volume, an issue on "Education and Human Dignity" featured articles on the development of racial bias in young children and the meaning of stereotypes--again, timely topics in that era and our own. TIP has been a strong voice for diversity and dignity in education. By my rough count, well over one-third of all TIP issues address diversity in teaching and learning.
Notice Anything Different?
To celebrate its anniversary, TIP is pleased to introduce a new look and a new feature. The covers of the four 40th-anniversary issues carry the names of each contributor to TIP since 1962. As you examine the covers, you will see a veritable Who's Who of education.
With this 40th-anniversary volume, we also introduce a new feature: "Additional Resources for Classroom Use." In addition to the article's references, each author has provided annotated bibliographies of periodicals, books, or web sites that extend the content of the article and focus on the implications for practitioners.
A new web site (www.coe.ohio-state.edu/TIP), an updated CD-ROM, and a reception at the 2002 AERA annual meeting are just a few of the things planned for TIP's anniversary year.
A TIP retrospective would not be complete without mentioning Marjory (Micki) Seltzer, managing editor from 1980-2001. Micki's insight and dedication to making every issue of TIP clear, concise, and reader-friendly ensured that every issue was of the highest quality. In early 2001, TIP welcomed Ava M. Stinnett as managing editor. With long-time TIP editorial assistant Susan Gabel, Ava will continue the tradition of excellence TIP has been rewarded for on numerous occasions during its 40-year history.
The TIP editorial office looks forward to providing you with another 40 years of thought-provoking educational literature that represents the highest quality and excellence in a field of inquiry.
