We at people for the ethical treatment of animals

Better Nutrition,  Nov, 2004  by Heather Moore

We at people for the ethical treatment of animals are thrilled that Ann Martin warned readers not to buy dogs from puppy mills or pet stores ("Purchasing a Pet," September 2004, p. 51). However, we discourage people from buying animals from so-called responsible breeders too.

It is irresponsible for anyone to chum out more animals when so many are dying for lack of good homes. Between 6 million and 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters across the United States each year. Of these, approximately 3-4 million are euthanized. Most are young, healthy and friendly. Many--about 25 percent of dogs who enter shelters--are purebred.

People can help end companion animal overpopulation by adopting animals from shelters and rescue groups instead of buying them--and by always having their animals spayed or neutered. Your readers can find out about low-cost spay/neuter services near them by contacting SPAY-USA at 800.248.7729. Readers who are interested in learning about more ways to help animals can visit www.HelpingAnimals.com.
