New vitamin?
Better Nutrition, August, 2004
New Vitamin?: Researchers have uncovered what some are calling a new vitamin, one that plays an important role in body processes such as gene regulation, metabolism and aging. More correctly, the nutrient is a more active form of vitamin [B.sub.3] or niacin but is not, in itself, a vitamin.
Dartmouth Medical School scientists say the nutrient, identified in whey and milk, may eventually offer an alternative to niacin. Like niacin, the new vitamin--called nicotinamide riboside--lowers blood cholesterol, but unlike niacin, it does not produce uncomfortable face-flushing effects.
