Brewer's yeast: it's just as the name implies: this supplement is cultivated for beer, but its benefits are the true buzz

Better Nutrition,  April, 2006  by Maureen Meyers Farrar

Brewer's yeast is a good example of reuse and recycle. First it may be used to brew beer. Then the remnants are cultivated and used as a nutritional supplement. Different from the yeast used to bake bread, supplemental brewer's yeast is inactive--meaning it has no leavening power--but that doesn't mean it isn't a nutritional powerhouse.

Brewer's yeast is a rich source of B-complex vitamins--[B.sub.1] (thiamin), [B.sub.2] (riboflavin), [B.sub.3] (niacin), [B.sub.5] (pantothenic acid), [B.sub.6] (pyridoxine), [B.sub.9] (folic acid) and H (biotin). These help provide the body with energy by breaking down carbohydrates, fats and proteins; plus they support the nervous system; maintain the muscles used for digestion; and promote liver, skin, eye and hair health. Brewer's yeast is also packed with minerals, such as chromium--an essential trace mineral that helps the body maintain blood-sugar levels and plays a role in increasing HDL ("good" cholesterol)--and selenium, a vital antioxidant that helps boost the immune system.

Brewer's yeast comes powdered, in flakes (good in shakes), capsules and tablets. High-quality brewer's yeast powder or flakes can contain as much as 60mcg of chromium per tablespoon. Doctors recommending this supplement often suggest 1-2 Tbs. per day.

Brewer's yeast is generally a safe supplement, but allergic reactions do occasionally occur. Also, diabetics should refrain from taking it as it may enhance the effects of diabetes drugs (e.g., insulin), which could lead to hypoglycemia. Pregnant and nursing women should also avoid taking brewer's yeast.

Otherwise, if you are healthy and looking for an all-around supplement, reach for brewer's yeast. Its nutritionally active nature may be just what your body needs.
