How do you shop?

Better Nutrition,  April, 2006  by Carey Rossi

I don't consider myself an impulsive person--especially when it comes to spending money. I don't go on shopping sprees. I shop with purpose, whether I need to replace threadbare black pants or purchase dinner ingredients, I move through stores knowing what I want.

But, yes, there are a couple of times when this isn't my M.O. The checkout line at the store can get me. Just as I am ready to pay, lip balms, natural remedies or anything at the register with cool packaging or an interesting purpose grabs my attention. In turn, I grab it and add it to my purchases. On this page, you'll see some of this month's impulse buys: Rachel Perry Lip Lover in grape juice and Stretch Island fruit leather (not shown) took me back to childhood shopping excursions with my mom; Rapunzel's Lady Truffles are just so cute (hello, packaging!), and, well, the Charlotte's Chocolate Chip Bite-lettes by Laura's Wholesome Junk Food was a moment of hormonal hunger. Then there are the occasions when I feel that I want to get lost amongst the aisles of my natural food store. So I wander the aisles, read labels and maybe find a new item that deserves to become part of my weekly list.

Those are my shopping habits--and I would love to know yours. Here at Better Nutrition, we aim to guide you through your natural food buying and, to do this better, we would like to find out more about how you shop. Fill out the reader survey on page 35, send it to us and, who knows, you might win one of three shopping sprees at your favorite health food store. It's just what you need to discover new staples to add to your shopping list--if you have one.

Happy shopping!
