Your February 2005 news item "got organic milk?"

Better Nutrition,  May, 2005  by William McMullin

Your February 2005 news item "Got Organic Milk?" (p. 15) spouted that milk was good for fighting osteoporosis. In actuality, dairy, products do not stop or reverse osteoporosis. They do not help our bones. The rate of bone loss is largely unaffected by dairy intake. According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), studies show that countries with the highest dairy consumption have the highest incidence of osteoporosis. PCRM says consuming large amounts of dairy will not maintain bone density. In fact, dairy is simply not healthy for us. Humans are the only species on Earth who consume milk past infancy. We were not designed with some odd flaw requiring us to drink the milk from other species. This is why it's not surprising to find that dairy products are actually linked to many health problems.

To reduce the risk of osteoporosis, reduce sodium intake, eat more fruits and vegetables, exercise, get calcium from plant foods and get vitamin D from sunlight or fortified sources such as some soymilks.
